Holistic Pelvic Care
Holistic Pelvic Care™ (HPC) is a practice consisting of physical and energetic tools designed to evaluate and restore balance in the pelvic space of the female body. Tami Kent, MS, a women’s health therapist pioneered HPC which helps to increase the strength of core muscles, enhance pelvic energy vitality, improve sensation and bring resonance to the pelvic bowl.
What types of pelvic symptoms may be addressed by HPC?
Any pelvic imbalance is addressed by hands-on pelvic care including:
- Urinary leakage (incontinence)
- Interstitial cystitis
- Postpartum pelvic pain and imbalances (“things just don’t feel quite right down there since having the baby”)
- Fertility challenges, difficulty conceiving
- Pelvic pain, painful intercourse, vaginismus
- Pelvic heaviness/fullness, cystocele, rectocele, pelvic organ prolapse
- Endometriosis, painful menstrual periods
What if I don’t have any symptoms?
The goal of HPC is to empower a woman to inhabit her pelvic space and occupy her feminine ground physically, energetically, emotionally, and spiritually. The pelvis serves a woman in many ways and yet receives little direct care. Many women in our society have never connected with their own pelvic space. The benefits of reconnecting with this sacred space include increased vitality, creativity and a deep sense of well-being.
What can I expect in a HPC session?
Your session will begin with a detailed intake including history and goals. We will introduce/review pelvic anatomy and I will conduct a brief pelvic evaluation including palpation and identification of internal pelvic trigger points and tension patterns. The assessment is followed by treatment to balance the pelvis. This includes intervaginal massage with myofascial release and trigger point work in combination with breathwork and visualization tools to assist core physical and energetic balance.
What effects will I notice after a HPC session?
Women describe immediate effects including a new internal awareness and sense of well-being in the core. Women also describe feeling more relaxed and centered, a greater sense of support, and increased strength in their pelvic muscles. On a clinical level, the internal massage increases blood and energy flow, revitalizing a woman’s root and enhancing her overall pelvic health.
Is pelvic massage painful?
The pelvic massage is gentle and respectful, following the lead of the body. It should never hurt and the response of a woman’s body guides the depth and direction of the hands-on work. Though HPC is gentle, the effects are profound and women often notice a change with even one session.

“I am feeling amazing! I got a chance this weekend to do my ‘homework’, and felt an immediate shift as the old unneeded energy left my body. I am so glad that I ended up in your office! Louisville is lucky to have you practicing what you do in town…”

Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy®
The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy®; (ATMAT) is an external massage technique that guides internal abdominal organs into their proper position (with a focus on aligning the uterus) for optimum health and well-being. Maya massage improves organ function by releasing physical and emotional congestion from the abdomen. This improves the flow of the circulatory, lymphatic and nervous systems to prevent symptoms that can lead to chronic disease. Dr. Rosita Arvigo developed this technique combining her background as a Naprapathic physician with her extensive studies with her mentor, Don Elijio Panti, a Maya Shaman from Belize and Hortence Robinson, a Belizian midwife. The Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy®; combine modern science with traditional healing and wisdom to produce a holistic path to physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.
What types of symptoms may be addressed by ATMAT?
ATMAT involves the entire abdomen and pelvis to help improve:
- Urinary leakage (incontinence), frequent urinary tract infections, urinary urgency and frequency
- Bony pelvic and hip pain including postpartum, post cesarean and post gynecological surgery
- Lower back pain
- Fertility challenges
- Constipation, sluggish digestion, bloating
- Pelvic heaviness/fullness, cystocele, rectocele, pelvic organ prolapse
- Endometriosis, heavy periods
- Painful menstrual periods, PMS
What can I expect in an ATMAT session?
Your session will begin with a detailed intake including history and goals for treatment. I will briefly introduce/review pelvic and abdominal anatomy and then you will receive abdominal, hip and back massage focused on aligning pelvic and abdominal organs. Instruction in Self Care techniques follows the massage session. Additionally, herbal remedies and other supportive treatments may be recommended to enhance the effect of the Arvigo® therapy.
What effects will I notice following an ATMAT session?
Many women report immediate relief from symptoms following a session. For others, it may take a longer time for their bodies to integrate the changes. I will work with you to devise a personal plan of care that will support your body’s journey to wellness and help achieve long-lasting effects.
How can ATMAT help with Fertility?
ATMAT for fertility is not just a belly rub- it is an entire program individualized for you which may include abdominal massage, diet and lifestyle modifications, herbal tonics, faja (support belt), vaginal herbal steams and relaxation techniques including meditation. Abdominal Massage helps to free & diminish old adhesions from invasive treatments or traumas to the pelvic and abdominal area, including fibroid tumors, endometriosis, cesarean delivery, abdominal surgery, infection or trauma. It corrects uterine malposition and promotes ligament healing, improves the blood flow to the pelvic organs and can improve the uterine lining. The ancient therapy of Maya Abdominal therapy focuses on root causes, both emotional & physical to allow the body to heal itself and optimize fertility.

I’ve had a hysterectomy – how does ATMAT help?
Women who have had hysterectomies also benefit greatly from ATMAT. The techniques improve circulation in and around scars and assists proper flow of lymph, which often becomes blocked after surgery and results in swelling, burning, and deep aching pain in the pelvis. By utilizing uterine massage techniques on a regular basis, scar tissue can be prevented from forming in the pelvis after surgery. Ligaments and other remaining organs also benefit from improving circulatory flow to the pelvis.
I’m pregnant – can I receive ATMAT?
Abdominal Therapy can be received throughout your entire pregnancy – as your uterus grows, the techniques change to align your uterus within your pelvic bowl to alleviate common discomforts of pregnancy and decrease pregnancy complications. For further information, see For Pregnancy.
Who should not receive ATMAT?
Maya Abdominal Massage is not recommended:
- If an IUD is present
- Within 6 weeks after abdominal surgery
- If an active infection or cancer is present in the abdominal or pelvic region
